Hi, I’m Annette Tonkin

Clinical Communication & Behaviour Change Explorer

I work with clinicians who are technically excellent—and quietly exhausted by conversations that don’t seem to lead anywhere.

Not because they lack skill or care.

But because the human side of healthcare is complex, unpredictable and rarely taught in a way that actually fits real clinical practice.

My role is to help clinicians rediscover how communication can support their work, rather than drain it.

My Clinical Story

I’ve spent more than 30 years as a physiotherapist, working across private practice, elite sport and healthcare leadership—including involvement in three clinic startups.

Over time, a pattern became impossible to ignore.

The clinicians who worked the hardest weren’t always seeing the best outcomes.

Patients understood the plan—but didn’t follow through.

Appointments were missed. Advice was nodded at, then quietly ignored.

It wasn’t a knowledge problem.

It was a conversation problem.

The turning point for me wasn’t a single course or framework—it was noticing that how we spoke, listened and responded shaped outcomes just as much as what we prescribed.

From that moment, communication stopped being “extra” and became central to my clinical thinking.

My Philosophy

I don’t believe in controlling behaviour.

I believe in understanding it.

Curiosity over control — Resistance isn’t something to overcome; it’s something to learn from.

Engagement over compliance — Real change happens when patients feel involved, not instructed.

Communication as a clinical skill — As learnable, measurable and impactful as any manual technique.

When clinicians shift how they approach conversations, the work often becomes lighter—and the outcomes stronger.

Who I’m Here For (and Who I’m Not)

I work with clinicians and healthcare teams who want practical, grounded approaches to communication that actually change outcomes.

I work best with:

Experienced clinicians who want depth, not quick fixes

Clinic owners looking to improve engagement, adherence and team communication

Educators and leaders supporting others through change

Not for you if you're looking for:

Scripts to memorise

One-size-fits-all communication hacks

Surface-level training without reflection

Change requires curiosity—and a willingness to look at conversations differently.

How I Think & Work

My work draws from multiple disciplines, including:

Motivational Interviewing

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

Clean Language

Behavioural science

Decades of lived clinical experience

But I’m not interested in piling on models or jargon.

I translate complex ideas into simple, flexible frameworks clinicians can adapt to their own style, setting and scope of practice. No scripts. No formulas. Just structure that supports thinking under pressure.

My Signature Style

My approach is:

Structured — clear frameworks without rigidity

Reflective — space to think, notice and refine

Human-first — grounded in respect for both clinician and patient

Evidence-informed — aligned with what we know about behaviour and change

No gimmicks. No fluff. Just thoughtful, practical work that honours the complexity of healthcare.
